Frequently asked questions
How much do I pay an employee for working on a public holiday in Singapore?
An employee covered by the Employment Act who works on a public holiday gets an extra day’s salary at their basic rate of pay, on top of their normal pay. By agreement, you can give a substitute holiday instead. Hours beyond their normal daily hours count as overtime for employees under Part 4.
How is rest day pay calculated?
For employees under Part 4 of the Employment Act, it depends on who asked and how long they worked. At the employer’s request: one day’s salary for up to half the normal daily hours, two days’ salary for more. At the employee’s request: half a day’s salary or one day’s salary. Work beyond normal daily hours adds overtime.
Who is covered by the rest day and overtime rules?
Part 4 of the Employment Act covers workmen (mainly manual labour) earning a basic monthly salary of up to S$4,500 and non-workmen earning up to S$2,600. It does not cover managers and executives. Public holiday entitlements apply to all employees covered by the Employment Act.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime is at least 1.5 times the hourly basic rate of pay, where the hourly basic rate for monthly-rated staff is (12 × monthly basic salary) ÷ (52 × 44). For non-workmen, MOM caps the rate used at a salary of S$2,600, or S$13.60 an hour.
Does this work for part-time staff?
No — part-time and hourly-rated employees follow different formulas. This calculator is for full-time, monthly-rated employees under the Employment Act.
