SEO vs Google Ads in Singapore: Which Should Your SME Start With?
SEO or Google Ads? Ads buy enquiries this week; SEO compounds over months. How Singapore SMEs should choose, combine both, and plan the first six months.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a small business in Singapore?
Neither is better in general. Google Ads is better when you need enquiries soon and customers search at the moment of need, such as aircon repair or movers. SEO is better for considered purchases where people research for weeks, such as renovation or tuition. Most SMEs end up using ads for speed and SEO for long-term cost per enquiry.
How long does SEO take to work in Singapore?
In Google's own 'How to hire an SEO' video, the guidance is that SEO typically takes four months to a year to implement improvements and see potential benefit. A new website in a competitive category sits at the longer end. Fixing a site that is not indexed properly can show results faster, because you are removing a blocker rather than building authority.
What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
SEM, or search engine marketing, is usually used to mean paid search ads such as Google Ads, where you pay per click to appear. SEO is the work of earning unpaid rankings through useful pages, a sound website and a credible reputation. Some people use SEM to cover both, so check what an agency means before comparing proposals.
Do Google Ads appear in AI Overviews in Singapore?
Yes. Google's Ads Help page 'About ads and AI Overviews' lists Singapore among the countries where ads can show above, below or within AI Overviews, in English. Advertisers cannot opt out of or directly target that placement, and Google does not show these ads for sensitive categories such as finance and healthcare.
Do I need special optimisation to appear in Google's AI Overviews?
According to Google Search Central, there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. In practice, that means normal SEO: clear, useful pages that answer the question directly.
Should I stop Google Ads once my SEO starts ranking?
Not automatically. Look at each search term: if you rank well organically and your paid clicks on that term convert no better, try reducing spend there and watch total enquiries. Keep ads on terms where you do not rank yet, during peak seasons, and for urgent searches where being first matters.
